It is a barrel type of cactus with extraordinary scarlet zygomorphic, tubular flowers it is a very variable species.

Subspecies, varieties, forms and cultivars of plants belonging to the Denmoza rhodacantha group

  • Denmoza erythrocephala (K.Schum.) A.Berger: (Denmoza rhodacantha) The name ''erythrocephala'' refers to old mature plants having multiple number of spines and sometimes with thin, 6 cm long bristly spines. The young plants with fewer but strong spines are known as "rhodacantha".
  • Denmoza rhodacantha (Salm-Dyck) Britton & Rose: The name '"D. rhodacantha" refers to young plants having few strong spines. Old plants of the same species with multiple number of spines and sometimes with thin greysh-white, bristly spines up to 6 cm long correspond to the description of "D. erythrocephala".
  • Denmoza rhodacantha var. diamantina Slaba: It is a fiercely spiny cactus with impressive and showy ivory or yellowish spines. The spines shape and colour of this species changes considerably with age and the old specimen after many years start producing long white bristle.
  • Denmoza rhodacantha cv. Orange Spines: The spines on young plants are orange to rich-amber coloured.
  • Denmoza rhodacantha cv. Yellow Spines: The spines on young plants are yellowish to amber in colour, aging to grey with time.
